Decorating or redecorating a child’s bedroom is so much
fun! You get to choose exciting items and in some cases play around with colours,
posters and bedding amongst others, but proper planning has to be involved. The
plan is to make the space a fun, cozy and safe room where they can relax and
also express themselves.
Let’s start with having a Theme; This means your paint or wallpaper, furniture and bedding may
all have something that links them. You could go with the child’s favourite
comic book, cartoon, or hobby (like music or football). If you’re not up for
making everything conform to a particular theme you could piece different items
from your child’s favourites.
Having a Budget
is important, you might not want to spend so much or you might want to go all
in. whatever the case may be a budget is very important as it is a vital aspect
of planning.
Safety cannot be overemphasized. This should be considered when choosing fabric
types for bedding or curtains or the type of bed and bed location. Dangling chords
and wires should be avoided. Do not hang or place objects above the bed, all in
all safety should be a major factor when choosing items for the room.
Aha! Colour!
Choosing colours can be tricky, your child’s favourite colour may not look so
amazing on a wall so it is advisable to get a colour chart to guide you. There
are some colours that may have a hint of that colour you long for, soothing
colours are great for children's bedroom walls. See about choosing a fun colour
for the wardrobe or dresser.

Here’s a list of some ideas you can use to improve
your child’s space:
- Statement wallpapers, posters and pieces of art can be chosen to vamp up the space.
- A section of the wall can be used to display your child’s artwork and masterpieces from school.
- If space is a problem, consider choosing a bed with inbuilt drawers so you can skip installing a wardrobe or just for extra storage space
- Children love to scribble, especially those learning how to write and hold pencils; a chalkboard wall would be nice! If space is a problem, chalkboard paint can be used on the back of a door (How cool is that?)
- Make creative boxes available; these can contain lego, toys and stationary
- Install a growth chart
- If redecorating, get rid of unnecessary items.
- Coloured tables and chairs

In the case where you have two children or more sharing
a room, take all their personalities into consideration as you decorate. You can have twin beds placed side by side or adjacent to each other, a bunk bed or one bunk bed and a normal bed; depending on the number of children in the room

You can also demarcate bookshelves and wardrobes, so each child has their individual storage space. As you decorate, you can look for ways to encourage your child's passion, be it music, reading, or painting.
As you can see, decorating a child's bedroom is fun.
