DIY: Dealing with mould at home.

As a home-owner, the least thing you would want to see in your home is a mould/mildew infestation because not only can it cause an extensive damage to your floor and walls, it's unappealing, gives a foul odour and can also pose serious health problems for you and your household  Mould can grow anywhere moisture, oxygen and organic material are present, and it's particularly common in damp, humid areas of the home, like basements, crawlspaces and showers. Once you have identified a potential mould problem area or an area of existing mould growth, you can begin steps to prevent or control mould.

For those who have no idea what mould is, mould is a soft, green or grey growth that has a woolly appearance and usually develops on old food or on objects that have been left for too long in warm, wet air, not to be confused with mildew which grows mostly on plants is not quite as hazardous but also has it own dangerous effects on your health. Mould is basically caused by moist conditions and lack of proper ventilation, but sometimes mould on walls can be due to plumbing leaks, both inside and outside the property. Badly insulated heating pipes can also cause a build-up of moisture behind the walls. The kitchen and bathroom are two of the most common places for mould to grow because moisture and warm air are most likely to be generated from activities like cooking Thankfully, with the right tools in hand, getting rid of mould in these areas is relatively easy. One major key to preventing mould infestation is moisture control because without excessive moisture in your home, mould cannot grow. Other conditions that are often causes of mould includes:

  • Flooding
  • A leaky roof or window frames
  • Leaving windows open when it rains
  • Leaky or broken pipes
  • Leaky sinks, tubs or toilets
  • Poor ventilation
  • Damp environments
  • High levels of relative humidity in the home (greater than 50 percent)
  • House fires (mould is actually caused by the water used to put out the fire)
  • Any type of significant water damage in the home

Before embarking on this journey to get rid of mould in your home, always ensure that you are wearing a protective gear like eye wear, rubber gloves and you're  fully covered because any contact with the bleaching product can cause skin irritation.

  • If you do get any spray on your skin, then immediately rinse with water and seek medical advice if necessary.
  • Make sure the area that you are cleaning is well ventilated.
  • Test all products on a small inconspicuous area first to ensure there will be no staining or other adverse effects.

Mould can cause allergic reactions and poor health, so if you have an extensive problem with mould on walls, it may be best to seek expert help. Now that you’re safely protected, you should follow these easy steps to remove mould:

  • First, start by identifying the area of existing mould growth and eliminating the moisture source.
  • Make a solution of chlorine bleach and water – usually 1 part bleach to 3 parts water – or get hold of a household detergent with bleach as an active ingredient.
  • Using a stiff-bristled brush, scrub the blackened area.
  • Place a cloth or towel on the floor below the area that you plan to clean to ensure that the spray doesn't run down onto your floor.
  • Spray the areas where mould and mildew are present and wait a couple of minutes for the product to take effect.
  • Once you see the product starting to disappear, take a cloth, soak it in a bowl of hot water, wring it out and then wipe away the spray. Making sure you don't have too much water on the cloth, as this can make the paint or wallpaper on your walls bubble.

Alternatively, you might like to use a damp paper towel to wipe away the spray. This is a practical solution as the paper towel can then be thrown away, rather than needing to be rinsed like a cloth.
After repeating these steps a couple of times, the mould or mildew should be gone, and then you just need to leave the room to dry, ensuring it's well ventilated, so moisture can continue to escape.
